ATHLETE MENTAL PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

Mental skills training gives the athlete the space to practice developing the mental skills to gain a competitive edge over their competition. Learning how to use mental reps to prepare oneself for what’s ahead and participating in activities on topics such as present moment awareness, growth mindset, positive use of self-talk, believing in one’s ability and gaining the confidence to achieve anything an athlete puts their mind too can build the mental fortitude an athlete needs to achieve optimal performance  This can be done individually or through a workshop setting, developing the right program for the individual.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Jalen Martinez is a recent graduate from Ithaca College, where he earned a master’s degree in sport exercise science with a concentration in “Mental Performance.” He is working towards becoming a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC). Over the past two years, he has worked with both highly competitive programs at Ithaca College, consisting of the men’s and women’s tennis team and the women’s track and field team. Jalen worked alongside the coaching staff, gaining experience and knowledge in offering the proper support and help, allowing athletes to develop the mental skills leading to optimal performance. He has participated in individual sessions with athletes, developing plans through multiple meetings to overcome barriers. Jalen has also led and facilitated workshops and discussions for small, medium, and large groups of athletes, focusing on communication, values, confidence, self-talk, self-awareness, etc. He has had experience being an athlete throughout his life, including playing football at a scholarship D2 level, which gave him firsthand knowledge of the daily struggles athletes face while trying to balance various aspects of life. Jalen understands that these struggles can directly impact an athlete’s performance, and he believes it’s essential for athletes to confront these barriers or struggles upfront and know they are not alone.

Jalen is a mental performance consultant trainee under the mentorship of Dr. Kelsey Varzeas, Ed.M., Ph.D., CMPC, who will be overseeing all of his work with athletes.

Mental Performance Includes

Individual Sessions

  • Between the Athlete and Jalen
  • 1st meeting consist of a 15-20 minute consultation with the athlete, a parent/legal guardian, and Jalen diving into some introductions, a detailed outlook on what sessions would consist of, and minimally introducing the stressors or struggles the athlete is experiencing
  • Following the consultation, the athlete and guardians/parents will decide on which bundle they would prefer, whether it’s choosing the single session option or  the tier 1, 2, or 3 option to continue with the process.
  • Each bundle package consist of different services provided by Jalen, which will be further explained during the consultation
  • Once a plan is confirmed. 60 minute sessions will occur between the athlete and Jalen. These sessions will occur either on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule dependent on the desires of the athlete and or parent/legal guardian.
  • Topics focused on will vary dependent on the presenting concerns and goals of the athlete

Workshops (ADS/BDS)

    • A message on team buildr will be sent out to the athletes, and they will need to fill out a questionnaire which consist of stress, sport, and performance related questions to allow Jalen to gain a deeper understanding of what topics will be best to present on to benefit the athletes
    • For ADS, their season/program lasts 3 months which is 3 different phases. The workshops will be twice a week on a bi-weekly schedule, where an athlete must attend 1 workshop per phase.
    • Times and Schedule will vary depending on class schedule of ADS/BDS
    • These workshops will be focused on the topics the athletes mentioned in the questionnaire.
    • Mental Performance is now an add on to ADS. Jalen does understand these athletes have other commitments. If an athlete is unable to attend a workshop in a single phase then they must notify Jalen ahead of time, either through our team buildr app or in person.
    • BDS members will fill out a questionnaire to allow Jalen to gain an understanding in what they may present with
    • BDS workshops will be dependent on a timeline between coach DQ and Jalen finding the best possible times to facilitate these workshops

Workshops (Outside Teams/Schools)

  •

    • A meeting will be held with Jalen and or the head coach or staff member that has reached out to the HAUS who has requested Mental Performance services.
    • This meeting will allow Jalen to gain an understanding of some ideas and or presenting concerns of athletes who are either a part of a team or a school.
    • Logistics will be detailed and outlined in regards to how often and for how long these teams or schools would like Jalen to facilitate.
    • Jalen will  put together a program that fits the desire of the HC and or school staff members to see if it aligns with the idea to benefit the mental aspect of performance for the athlete.
