MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jalen Martinez is a recent graduate from Ithaca College, where he earned a master’s degree in sport exercise science with a concentration in “Mental Performance.” He is working towards becoming a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC). Over the past two years, he has worked with both highly competitive programs at Ithaca College, consisting of the men’s and women’s tennis team and the women’s track and field team. Jalen worked alongside the coaching staff, gaining experience and knowledge in offering the proper support and help, allowing athletes to develop the mental skills leading to optimal performance. He has participated in individual sessions with athletes, developing plans through multiple meetings to overcome barriers. Jalen has also led and facilitated workshops and discussions for small, medium, and large groups of athletes, focusing on communication, values, confidence, self-talk, self-awareness, etc. He has had experience being an athlete throughout his life, including playing football at a scholarship D2 level, which gave him firsthand knowledge of the daily struggles athletes face while trying to balance various aspects of life. Jalen understands that these struggles can directly impact an athlete’s performance, and he believes it’s essential for athletes to confront these barriers or struggles upfront and know they are not alone.
Jalen is a mental performance consultant trainee under the mentorship of Dr. Kelsey Varzeas, Ed.M., Ph.D., CMPC, who will be overseeing all of his work with athletes.
